How graduated compression works:

Provides external support - decreases superficial venous pressure and empties blood into the deeper veins

Provides support to the calf muscle pump assisting in venous return from the legs back to the heart

Helps prevent oedema formation (swelling)

Increases blood flow velocity

Proper graduated compression gradually decreases from the ankle to the calf to the thigh
